Smartphone Or Laptop: Which Is Better For A Fresher?

Hi peeps,just got admitted into the university.Actually,am in a dilemma as to which one to choose to buy between a laptop and a smartphone as i can't buy both for now..need your candid advice pls(preferrably from experienced folks)..which do you feel is the more viable option that will aid my academic work pls
