Southend suffered their second league defeat, as the team went down 2:0 away to Plymouth last weekend. They were combative and held the opponent to 0:0 in the first halftime, although the visitors played with a man less since fifteenth minute of the game.
They suffered a lot from numerical disadvantage in the second part, when fatigue started to be felt, as they conceded two goals in 52nd and 68th minute, without being able to react later in the match. They have now completed three matches without a victory, while coach Phil Brown doesn’t seem to be very concerned, as he still have faith in the abilities in his roster as he was satisfied with what he saw despite he defeat. On Tuesday, they visited Wimbledon, but failed to get the qualification in a 3:2 final defeat. Substitute midfielders Deegan (1/0) and Worrall (7/0) are doubtful after suffering injuries in midweek game. Midfielder Timlin remains long term absentee, while important defender Bolger (5/0) returns from suspension.

Oxford, on the other side, comes from a 3:3 draw at home against Dagenham last weekend, after an impressive game overall. Oxford took the league in third minute, but got drawn after four minutes, conceding a goal at the start of the second half. Reacted strongly and they managed to take a 3:2 lead, however weren’t able to keep it, conceding the third goal in 71st minute.
In general, the result was fair as the team put an end to a run of four defeats in the league. Coach Appleton was happy after the draw, with the fighting spirit of his team. At the same time, he talked about lack of concentration in the defense saying that the game reminded of a basketball match. During the midweek, they were knocked out of the League Thropy Cup, losing 2:0 to Cheltenham. Important midfielder Rose (5/0) is probably out for this game, being extremely doubtful. Suspended is midfielder Meades (3/0) who got red carded in a midweek’s game against Cheltenham.
Everyting seems to be on the side of Southend in this game. They have every reason to get an easy victory and everything except that would be a huge surprise.
