Have you ever tried running away from or dodging any law enforcement agent as you drive?
We all know about the fear of 'road safety' that some drivers have because once those guys catch you, there is every chance that they would find something wrong with your car unless it's a new car with everything intact.
Coming down to the local level, I live in a town where they have what they call 'task force' or local government 'agberos' who enforce rules such as wrong parking, one-way, and motorcycle emblem. Only God knows what the last one is for. Well, I don't own a car yet, (so no problem with 'road safety' for now) I ride my bike around town most of the time and I've gotten into trouble with these local government 'agberos' more than once.
The first time was when I went to the market with my bike. I parked it where I saw other bikes being parked and I went to make my purchases. But on getting back after my purchase, my bike had disappeared! What happened? My heart raced because it was only mine that was missing, as other bikes were still there. Was it stolen? How could that happen with so many people watching? I then moved over and asked one man what transpired there. He answered 'task force don carry am go LGA headquarter because of wrong parking' What the hell does that mean? I asked myself because that was the first time I was hearing it. Next question. Where is the LGA headquarters? I had never been there until that day. Anyway, I finally took an okada that led me there and I had to pay a fine to redeem my bike. You can imagine my anger at the whole thing because it just ruined my day. I vowed never to come in contact with those guys again but did my vow work? Your guess is as good as mine.
On another day, a long while after this first incident, I was riding again and I came to a place with potholes. I saw some guys stopping people and checking their bikes. Well, wetin concern me? So I continued riding towards them only to be be stopped by these guys 'make we see your emblem. You get emblem?' they asked. I had heard of motorcycle emblem but never knew it was something serious. So I told them I had none. They then asked me to pay a fine or else they would take my bike to... you know where- the LGA headquarters...again! Thank God I had up to the amount of the fine so I paid and was let go. 'Curse you guys!' I muttered under my breath. I made another vow again not to ever meet those guys again.
My vow worked for a long while because the next year I made sure I renewed the emblem on time. Now unto my main story. On a good Friday morning four weeks ago, I was going out with my bike. In fact I was already late as I had an appointment with someone who was already waiting for me. There were two routes leading to where I was going. One was shorter from my house but I had to take the other because I needed some petrol for the bike.
So on I went and after barely three minutes ride, I saw some guys stopping bikes from afar, 'let it not be what I am thinking' I said to myself. Come on it's too early in the year for them to start checking for emblem. So, I rode on. But on getting closer it dawned on me that they were actually checking for the emblem! 'oh lord not today, not today...again!, why did I ever take this route today?' As I got closer one of them started waving for me to stop but I did something very much unlike me. Like a flash I felt a surge of adrenaline within me and I fired on the bike at top speed to evade being stopped. I did a little meandering damning the consequences but alas... James-bond-gone-bad, I fell on my side brushing my foot against the ground. I nearly 'broke' the leg of the guy that was trying to stop me. The guy was so angry that he ordered me to get off the bike immediately. Considering the stunt I just pulled, I knew that no amount of begging would save me from paying the fine.
'Oya N1500 or I go carry your bike go local government' said my captor.
I wondered how these guys always catch me whenever I go out with money. So I paid the fine and went back home to wash my feet because I had injured it during my 'stunt show' and there was little blood and sand on them. I rested a while asking myself 'what did I just do back there?' I was still suprised at my action.
I then realized that one is capable of doing very drastic and daring things under pressure. I have told myself that from now on I would never pull such a stunt again, and I would make sure I get my emblem on time to avoid all these 'ordeals'. I know I'm not the only one who has tried to evade law enforcement agents on the road. Many people have tried it and got away while others ended up harming themselves.
So if you have any of such experience please share. It may be yourself or the driver of a bus you were traveling in. The floor is open. Please drop your comments below...
