Two wireless charging alliances join forces

On Tuesday, the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and the Power Matter Alliance (PMA) agreed to join together to improve standards for wireless charging. Of three standards in use today, the only one not affected by Tuesday's move is the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi. The agreement means that each side will use some of the technology belonging to the other side to improve the wireless charging capabilities of each others' products.



PMA is a leader in inductive charging with its wireless charging products available in places like McDonalds and Starbucks. It's Open Network API can transform individual charging spots into a global wireless network. A4WP is the leader in resonant wireless charging. The agreement should lead to global standards for wireless charging that should help make it more commercially viable in a number of devices.

Board members from both alliances voted on the agreement. Those members included some of the biggest names in mobile technology including Qualcomm and Samsung.
