Valentine’s Day / Love Day
By Sidra Kaukab
Indeed, Islam is the religion of altruism, true love, and cooperation on that which is good and righteous. We implore Allah Almighty to gather us together under the umbrella of His All-encompassing Mercy, and to unite us together as one man.
Allah Almighty says: “The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy.” (Al-Hujurat 49: 10)
Focusing more on the question in point, I can say that there are forms of expressing love that are religiously acceptable, while there are others that are not religiously acceptable. Among the forms of love that are religiously acceptable are those that include the love for Prophets and Messengers.
It stands to reason that the love for Allah, and His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) should have the top priority over all other forms of love.
Islam does recognize happy occasions that bring people closer to one another, and add spice to their lives. However, Islam goes against blindly imitating the West regarding a special occasion such as Valentine’s Day. Hence, commemorating that special day known as the Valentine’s Day is an innovation or bid`ah that has no religious backing. Every innovation of that kind is rejected, as far as Islam is concerned. Islam requires all Muslims to love one another all over the whole year, and reducing the whole year to a single day i.e. Valentine’s Day is totally rejected.
Hence, we Muslims ought not to follow in the footsteps of such innovations and superstitions that are common in what is known as the Valentine’s Day. No doubt that there are many irreligious practices that occur on that day. these practices are capable of dissuading people from the true meanings of love and altruism. so much so that the celebration is reduced to a moral decline.
Celebrating Valentine’s day is haram and forbidden.
Reason 1
Valentine’s Day encourages the free mixing , dating and meeting of opposite sex. while Quran says:
“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers…”[Al-Nour, 24: 30-31]
Reason # 2
Valentine’s Day encourages muslim women to meet NONE MAHRAMS unveiled, which is haram.
Sayyidina Ahdullah reported the Prophet (SAW) as saying, “A woman must observe the veil because when she comes out, the devil seeks an opportunity to tempt her.
[t[b]irmidhi 18:1176]
Reason # 3[/b]
Valentine’s Dayencourages None mehrams to meet each other privately. but its forbidden for their own sake.
“Whenever a man is alone with a woman, the Devil makes a third.”(Tirmidhi 7:2172)
Reason # 4
Ibn ”Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard Allah”s Messenger (may peace be upon him) delivering a sermon and making this observation: “No person should be alone with a woman except when there is a Mahram with her, …..…” [Sahih Muslim, Book 7, Number 3110]
Reason # 5
Prophet [salehalawaalihi wasalam] said “ Whoever /imitates/resembles a people/nation is one of them.”
[Reported by Imaam Ahmad Musnad Ahmad vol. 2, no. 50. ,*Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3512]
*.It encourages non mehrams to meet each other.Encourages Bf/Gf culture which is totally forbidden.
