Good News: ASUP Strike To End Soon – Says Minister of Education

We have been hearing these same story since 22nd April, 2013 when the FG/ASUP decided to go on strike, but up to this very moment, Nigerian Polytechnic students are still on strike. But then, it is refreshing to get another update and hopefully, the strike will be called off soon. (hopefully) Latest news on ASUP Strike 2014 The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyisom Wike, says the ongoing strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) will soon be called off, as the government has met most of the union’s demands. The Minister gave the assurance while responding to issues in the Education sector on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily, Today, Monday, 3rd January, 2014. He said that the federal government had agreed to set up a governing council and had also set up the needed assessment programme for the institution. Mr Wike said and I quote “We have reached an agreement on the salary grade issues and we have worked out what should be paid. We are now looking at how to pay it because the government cannot afford to pay it completely. It has to be at installments. “We have made a proposal to the federal govt. and they have taken our proposals and said that they will go back to their union. We have also made some recommendations to the government,” We thought the Lecturers of the Nigerian Polytechnics are fighting for Polytechnic students to obtained Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) as their counterpart? Are they only interested in their loot? and how to share it? For those who are not aware, Higher National Diploma (HND) is obtained from Polytechnic, while Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) is obtained from Universities. Hopefully, ASUP 2014 strike will be called off soon
